Picture this: after a gruesomely long and stressful day, you make your way home only to find out you’ve been robbed. A majority of your most prized possessions have been stolen, and the culprit has left no trace of where they’ve run off to. While you’re only imaging this scenario, many are living through the nightmare known as burglary on a daily basis. In fact, nearly 2.5 million robberies occur every year, which works out to be about 10,000 robberies per day.
A troubling revelation has identified that nearly two-thirds of these robberies occur in residential areas. Which means it is more likely that families will be impacted by these senseless robberies. As a majority of these robberies are designed to be done when a home is vacant, the most common times break-ins occur are between 6:00 A.M and 6:00 P.M on weekdays. The average burglar is fairly quick as well, spending only eight to ten minutes in the home to scour all of its goods. Unfortunately, many of these break-ins are costly to the families impacted. Nearly $2,500 worth of damage is done to the average home burglary victim. Recent research indicates that within the span of the next 20 years, three out of four residential homes will be robbed. Despite understanding how costly these robberies have been known to be, many homeowners have failed to install any sort of security system.
Homeowners should know that any security measure is a solid investment for ensuring the security of their home. With that being said, however, a few investments will provide more security than others. For example, installing alarm systems can be an excellent foundation for a safer home. Not only do these systems maintain the safety of a home’s perimeter, they even deter burglars away as they’ll look to avoid homes with these systems installed. Research around these systems has indicated that four in five burglars checked homes for security systems prior to breaking in. Three out of the five burglars that had noticed an alarm system indicated they’d avoid pursuing that home and look for a home without one. The capabilities of these security systems extend past just a tight perimeter, they even intimidate burglars mid break-in with intruders exiting the moment they notice the system and never returning.
Incorporating additional security measures is an effective way for families to reduce their risk of burglary as well. Another common security measure comes in the form of video doorbells. With just about one in every five homes having these installed, more and more burglars are being exposed. For families with a particular worry of being robbed, there are companies that offer security-based services to protect the home from burglaries. As of now, about 17% of homeowners employ these companies to professionally monitor their homes for an additional safety measure. Families are just as capable of monitoring their own security systems, but often fail to place these cameras in such a way that their home remains secure from every angle.
Families should install these cameras in places that overlook the nearest entryways of their home. Back doors, side doors, and a home’s front door should all be capable of being monitored through these cameras. A camera dedicated to the space surrounding a home’s garage is also very common as it gives a very clear view of anyone surveying the home from the outside. However, as with any security measure to protect your family, it is best to keep these cameras hidden from potential intruders. A location hidden enough to ensure no one is capable of seeing it, but in such a spot that your family remains safe is the goal.
